THE CASTLES OF THE DROME
Royal Palace - Bucolic Fortress - Creative Citadel !
Recently classified "most beautiful village of France" Grignan has the largest renaissance castle in the South-East of France.
Reaching its golden age in the 17th century in the image of Versailles, it is the residence of the representative of the Sun King in Provence.
Mentioned as early as the 11th century, it was transformed in the Renaissance into a prestigious boating residence by the Adhémar family.
In the 17th century, the Marquise de Sévigné stayed there with her daughter Françoise-Marguerite, who by her marriage had become Countess de Grignan.
Built on a rocky promontory like the castle of Grignan, the medieval fortress of Suze la Rousse is in the heart of a vast landscape shaped for centuries by the cultivation of the vine.
Owned by the Baux, co-princes of Orange, the castle becomes, with the help of extensions and transformations, a real military fortress.
Then, in the 16th century, it was transformed into a marina, with in its centre a magnificent Renaissance-style courtyard of honour.
On the outskirts of the castle lies the Garenne, a vast wooded park with Mediterranean species where the walls of a 16th-century Paume game, a Pigeonnier and a chapel still stand.
This day will bring you to the time of the Marquis and Marquises, the Princes and Princesses.
